Hong Kong Student Visa Guide

Non-local students must obtain a Student Visa / Entry Permit from the HK Immigration Department before arrival. Below is the full process, documents, fees and timeline.

Eligibility

  • Admitted as a full-time student by a UGC-funded or registered post-secondary institution
  • Sufficient funds for tuition, accommodation and living costs (≈ HK$200,000 / year)
  • Institution serves as the visa sponsor
  • Valid travel document and clean record

Required Documents

  • Form ID 995A (filled by applicant)
  • Form ID 995B (filled by institution / local sponsor)
  • Passport copy (bio page + signature page)
  • Birth certificate / household registration
  • Academic records (transcripts, diplomas)
  • Offer letter from the institution
  • Financial proof (bank statement, fixed deposit or parents' income)
  • Two recent passport photos (white background)

Application Process

  • 1. After receiving offer, request sponsor documents from the international office
  • 2. Complete ID 995A and gather all supporting documents
  • 3. Submit the full package to the institution; they file it with HK Immigration
  • 4. Processing time: 6–8 weeks (longer in Jun–Aug)
  • 5. Upon approval, an e-Visa label is issued; print and attach to passport
  • 6. Present at port of entry to be stamped in

Fees

  • Visa fee: HK$230 (multiple entry)
  • Validity usually matches the programme duration, up to 6 years
  • Extension fee: HK$230; apply 4 weeks before expiry

Post-graduation IANG

  • Non-local graduates of full-time accredited programmes may apply for IANG
  • First application grants 24 months stay without needing a job offer
  • Apply within 6 months of graduation as 'fresh graduate'; later requires proof of employment
  • Fee: HK$230. After 7 years continuous stay, eligible for permanent residency
